Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence?

Autumn is the season for lawn renovation Well, if this summer has anything to do with it, the answer would be “NOT APPLICABLE,” since I’m sure most homeowners, if you’re anything like me, think everything is brown and there is not a shred of green left in my, or my neighbors’ lawns. Yes, it’s renovation time (cue the confetti and balloons)!!! Lawn renovation is a vital part in the annual maintenance of your home or business. The “whys and hows” of the lawn renovation process are fairly straightforward. Lawn renovation helps give turfgrasses, as well as the soil below, boosts in two important resources: air and water. The two central components of a lawn renovation are aerification and reseeding. By aerifying your lawn, creating those thousands of holes, we are opening the root systems of the grasses up to get more contact with water and the air. By then reseeding, …

Anything besides a maple!

Consider alternatives to maple trees for autumn colors Don’t get us wrong. We like maple trees as much as the next landscape design company. Especially this time of year, as maple trees shine in any setting, with their reds, oranges and burgandies lighting up the fall landscape. But from a big picture point-of-view, maple trees do have the tendency to be overused. And as the old saying goes, “Variety is the spice of life.” So allow us to give you a list of some of our favorite plants that can really spice up your home’s fall landscape color palette. We divided them up by fall leaf color. I included a range of plants in terms of size, from large shade trees to small shrubs. Beaver Creative Environments’ list: shrubs and trees that add fall color and interest REDS   * Dynasty Elm * Northern Red Oak * Kousa & Flowering …

Why so few ornamental grasses?

Ornamental grasses add color and interest to landscapes One thing we’ve noticed in Kansas City is how few ornamental grasses appear in residential landscapes. The most glaringly obvious reason may be a lack of sun. For those of you in the more established neighborhoods with mature shade trees, you know what we mean. But for anyone with even the smallest planting areas that get enough sunlight, please try out some ornamental grasses. Autumn is the season when these plants really shine and you should experience these graceful garden ornaments. Drive a couple of hours west and you will see how dramatic a landscape can be when enhanced by native grasses. The Flint Hills of Kansas, while on a much grander scale than a home landscape, can give you an idea of how well-suited most grasses can be to the fall experience. Along with the golden yellows, oranges, reds and burgandies of …

Water features bring the serenity of water to your outdoor environments

A water feature can transform your outdoor landscape environment into something distinctive, provide a focal point in a front or back yard and even create a separate ecosystem. Water features allow you to savor a private paradise where you can relax and enjoy leisure time with family and friends. There are many different types of water features, ranging from a simple bubbling rock to a large waterfall that spills into a pool or pond. Consider these common types of water features as you envision your own waterscape. Water Fountains Fountains can be works of art in and of themselves, such as a freestanding fountain designed as a landscape focal point, perhaps surrounded by flower beds or a rock garden. Smaller fountains can enhance a small garden or hardscape area. Wall fountains can be a great accent for your home’s exterior. Ponds and water gardens Ponds can be very simple or …

Landscape design for all seasons!

Often we find landscapes designed only for three seasons: spring, summer and fall. The landscape goes from breathtaking to drab, and some people don’t realize the spectacular things we can do to bring out the wonders of our Midwest winter season. Think winter landscape first When we design your landscapes, or do a renovation of your matured landscapes, we think of winter first. By adding plants, trees and hardscapes into your landscape that are interesting or unique, you will have a landscape fit for all four seasons. Winter interest in landscape largely emanates from the architecture of the lawn and gardens: Ornamental grasses add sweeping background to your other plants. Hydrangeas, dormant, with flowers intact, look like oversized snowflakes when covered with frost. Hollies, heavenly bamboo, barberry and other winter fruiting plants add unexpected splashes of brilliant reds and oranges. Deciduous trees bring drama as they rise up dark and …
